Every time you turn on the tap, shower, or flush the toilet, wastewater flows through the drains and out of your home. But just like any fixture, drains can suffer wear and tear due to waste buildup, as well as corrosion caused by chemicals and grease. When this happens, you’ll notice they start to clog — first, with pooling or standing water, then rotting odours, and worst, sewer backups and indoor flooding.
The last thing you need is a full-on plumbing emergency. Unfortunately, most homeowners don’t see the need to call a professional plumber until it strikes. By then, the damage is often large and both expensive and time-consuming to repair. The good news is, a routine and regular drain maintenance service can fix that.
What is drain maintenance?
A full drain maintenance service is a thorough workup of your home’s plumbing system. It includes a drain inspection using specialized cameras and probes to identify potential issues, patching up minor damages, and cleaning the drains thoroughly to rid them of backup that’s causing waste buildup.
Clogged drains are the number one enemy of any healthy and reliably working plumbing system. And often, it’s years of everyday activities that cause them. These include accumulating waste items like loose hair, sludge, grease, and residue flushed down the washroom and kitchen drains. Preventative drain maintenance cleans out all this built-up waste to unclog the drains and sewers regularly before they become fully blocked and result in sewer backup and indoor flooding — massive plumbing nightmares that release waste back into your home.
Call Our Drain Maintenance Experts
At Drain King Plumbers, we’re confident that plumbing emergencies can be prevented. With regular maintenance, we can keep your home’s plumbing system working optimally, preventing broken fixtures, massive clogging, and filthy, damaging backups.
Our certified plumbing experts work with you to determine a regular drain maintenance schedule based on your lifestyle. With regular maintenance, we can guarantee long-term optimal function so that you can avoid backups and large and expensive plumbing repairs.
Why You Need Regular Drain Maintenance
The fact is, plumbing nightmares like burst pipes, sewer backups, and indoor flooding don’t happen overnight. These happen because everyday waste items like loose hair, sludge, soap residue, and grease build up in the drains as wastewater is flushed out. In fact, most homeowners won’t notice drainage issues until they become frequent.
The signs of drainage issues are common. Standing or pooling water in the tub, shower, or even kitchen sink indicate slow and backed-up drains. As well, foul odours circulating no matter how much you clean point to built-up waste as the drains can’t flush them out effectively. And if you find yourself using the plunger more than a few times, it’s time to call a plumber. All of these are just plumbing emergencies waiting to happen — but can be prevented with regular drain maintenance.
Preventative Drain Maintenance Plan
At Drain King Plumbers, we work with you to build a preventative drain maintenance plan that works for your lifestyle and budget. Following the initial drain camera inspection, we’ll set up a schedule and establish routine treatments to keep your drains — and the entire plumbing system — fully functional:
Hydro-jetting: We use high-pressure water to flush the drains and remove built-up and blockage-causing waste. Our guarantee is an effective and toxic-free cleaning without using corrosive chemicals that damage your plumbing system.
Treatment: We also use safe, eco-friendly enzymes to break down and remove stubborn waste items, such as hair proteins, oils, and fat lodged in the drains, and restore your drains to optimal function — with a nice, fresh scent inside your home.
Ongoing maintenance: We’ll monitor the drains through routine, camera-guided inspections and update your preventative maintenance plan as needed, or perform repairs to address minor damages as they occur.
When to Call a Plumber for Drain Maintenance
The number one rule of good plumbing and housekeeping is — don’t wait until the last minute to call a plumber. Preventative maintenance should be part of your regular property upkeep, not the last resort when a plumbing emergency is about to happen. Whether you moved into an old house or a new build, here are some telltale signs that you should book drain maintenance now:
Clogged kitchen drains: slow drainage caused by cleaning habits like regularly flushing fats, grease, and food scraps down the kitchen drain, causing a buildup
Clogged bathroom drains: standing water while you shower, or weak flushing power caused by built-up loose hair, soap residue, toothpaste, toilet paper, grime, and other products
Clogged utility room drains: moisture or water buildup in the basement or utility rooms caused by dirt, debris, and other residues, which can cause indoor flooding
Clogged sewer drains: recurring drainage issues in multiple parts of the house, indicating a backed-up sewer, which can cause wastewater flooding when left unaddressed.
Drain Maintenance: How Plumbers Unclog Drains and Other Frequently Asked Questions
How do plumbers unclog drains?
In traditional plumbing, motorized drain augers or snakes are lowered into the drains until they reach the obstruction; the motors drill into it to break it down, allowing removal and improving drainage. Even with DIY kits available, professional help is recommended to avoid damaging the pipes. Recently, hydro-jetting — typically used for regular cleaning — has also been used to break through clogs and dissolve them.
How does drain cleaning work?
Drains are typically cleaned using hydro-jetting equipment or a powerful hose that accommodates high water pressure for flushing the drains and removing blockages. This all-natural plumbing technique is a safe, toxic-free alternative to cleaning chemicals that often erode pipes and degrade the plumbing system quicker.
How much does it cost to snake a mainline?
Snaking the mainline — or unclogging it to remove waste buildup — can cost anywhere between $100 to $200, although exact prices can vary depending on the size of the property and the age or condition of the line. This is a small investment in keeping your home’s drainage system functioning properly to prevent bigger damage and emergencies.
How much does it cost to rod out a drain?
This typically starts at around $150, but a professional plumber can give an exact quote depending on the amount of work that needs to be done and the condition of the drain. Bear in mind, though, that regular drain maintenance services are more affordable and easier to budget for than unexpected emergency plumbing bills.

The plumber arrived quickly and was great. He fixed the problem and was willing to answer my many questions. I did find the company to be priced much higher than I’ve paid with others, but I was glad to have my kitchen sinks working again.

◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆MUST READ. Google says my review was viewed by 5000 people. Thanks everyone. ◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆Once this company gets your money, they are gone.◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆
You are looking at this review because they have a lot of reviews online (Genuine or NOT!!). The records reveal that this company, despite being just 5 years old, has accumulated over a thousand reviews solely on Google. You are smart if you see the funny patterns on the reviews. They have a disproportionately high number of reviews on Google compared to other sites and claim to have received awards from their second year. This isn't the hottest restaurant in town with tons of exposure among the younger generation. Their customers are home owners. I can't even imagine how much cash this company is burning each month.
Here is my first hand experience with this circus company. I set up an appointment because they said the estimate was free. When the plumber arrived, they changed their words and told me I have to pay him $310 for an "investigation", which doesn't include the actual work.
He showed me the terms and conditions that I needed to sign, and one of them required that I express satisfaction with the work they would do, even before they commenced their tasks. I questioned the plumber multiple times about the issue but he said it's the company policy. I later spoke with the manager and he wasn't surprised at all. Do you see the company not saying anything about this in their reply? It says it all. This is how they do their business.
I should have stopped there.
The plumber failed to find the source of the leak and made a misdiagnosis. The plumber was way off and I'm not even sure if he was a fully licensed plumber or just a junior plumber with no experience.
I hired their competitor and they found the leak within 10 minutes. They were surprised why Drain King couldn't find such a simple leak. Drain King, full of clowns, doesn't know what they are doing and will waste your time and money.
It was something so simple and so basic yet these guys failed miserably.
The new company found the problem so quickly I spent a fraction of what I paid these guys.
I even invited Drain King back to my house to give them a chance to see their failure, but they refused to do it. They are too embarrassed to come and see their failure.
Once they get your money, they are gone, and you won't see them again. When you report a problem, they are going to put you on their do not service list.
(like I'm gonna pay them again for their failure)
This company is a joke.
I now know why they wanted me to sign those documents even before they start the work.
It's because a lot of their customers are not happy with their incompetency and inability to diagnose the simplest problem. You can obtain your refund by processing a chargeback.

Drain king was a great company to work with, I got three different verbal quotes from different companies and their asscoiate, Jonathan, was the only one to provide a detailed breakdown of the quote. They fixed my outdoor drain pipe (spot repair). Furthermore, for my satisfaction they did the camera is inspection on a separate day as I was not an available the day of the repair thanks assistance from Kathleen and Jason (the manager). Overall, I definitely recommend the company.

We have used Drain King several times over the last 5 years for drain issues. The admin team (Kathleen) is always super friendly and detail oriented which helps in sending an appropriate plumber who is prepared to do the job! The plumber has been the same guy for 5 years (Jonathon H) and very polite and knowledgeable. He is able to understand the issues, provide feedback on prevention, and mitigation and then quickly and thoroughly fix the issues. The workmanship is a high quality which lasts! Their quotes and billing system is reasonable and work is guaranteed. We had the same issues happen, a mystery leak in our basement that kept changing locations :( and in that month they came back several times and only charged us for the one visit until the problem was fixed! I would highly recommend Drain Kings for all your plumbing needs!!
